In the last 25-30 years our roads and vehicles have changed dramatically, so too have testing and licensing requirements. Gone are the days where Mum or Dad alone can adequately prepare their novice driver. The picture shown here is showing a driver and the accompanying driver focussed on the task of driving - not all smiles, chatting and distracted. Too many drivers today treat their car as a mobile lounge-room or office, making our roads unsafe for the unskilled and unwary. As senior motorcycle instructors we have taught thousands of fully licensed drivers who costantly comment on how much they have learnt during the theory sessions and asking why similar training isn't it available to learner drivers.

WELL NOW IT IS !

As a parent you can explain to your learner driver the relevance of: Object fixation; car turning circles; vehicle weight tranfer; ABS brakes, new ESP systems, fight or flight responses; effects of in-car distractions; systems to recognize, approach and negotiate hazards; personal safety - strategies to deal with road rage situations & car invasion; routines to ensure vehicle roadworthyness; outline a cross section of who other road users are.

As parents of a learner driver you have a window of opportunity to assist your son or daughter to become skilled and safe drivers. Being an informed compentant driver is a skill for life.
